Womens' Story Circles
The purpose of Womens’ Story Circles is to help mothers with a child in recovery become better able to manage their own recovery journey.
Background
As a strengths specialist, I tap into Positive Psychology to help mothers of a child with drug and/or alcohol addiction to see that their enabling often originates from a positive place- typically from overused strengths. I designed the program to help women individualize their path to recovery by understanding their personality differences and unique life experiences.
I am the parent of an adult child in recovery so I know, personally, that there are many ways we have to learn how to give up control (Step 1 of 12-Step Recovery Programs). Fortunately, there are two important variables that you can influence:
-
The way you see yourself (identity)
-
The way you tell your story (self-expression)
What
Womens’ Story Circles provide the creative outlet for improving self-concept and self-expression through an orchestrated blend of storytelling and journaling.
It is is based on the premise that Story and Circle are ancient, sacred containers for women’s wisdom. Like a book club, sewing circle or a campfire, our gathering will provide you with:
-
A safe place to share your own stories and hear other’s stories
-
A place to discover strengths and vulnerabilities
-
A place to learn, grow, and heal
When
Womens' Story Circles can be organized for 6-8 women to meet in 3 consecutive weekly sessions (evening or daytime) with a location and time to be determined based on participants' availability.
Email info@lifelinetherapy.net to register your interest and ask any questions you may have.
How
We will explore the following themes:
-
Mothering styles - what are the mothering strengths and struggles unique to your personality?
-
Brands of enabling - what is your personal coping style that leads to enabling? How can you use new knowledge of your personality to reduce or eliminate your codependent behaviors?
-
Addiction Impact - what can you learn by sharing your stories of loss? How can a LIfeline Review help you find hidden strengths and proud moments?

Why
Research has shown that there are physical, cognitive, and psychological health benefits that derive from developing meaningful narratives about life challenges:
-
A stronger immune system
-
Re-organized thinking
-
Reduced shame and stigma
-
Improved self-care
-
Enhanced intimacy in the important relationship you have with yourself
Note: Womens' Story Circles can be adapted to address the concerns of any number of different populations, e.g., women in recovery from addiction; 20-somethings seeking help with career and life transitions; those who need extra support to balance mental health issues with daily living.
